Don Selvey, NMD, MS

Dr. Selvey graduated from the Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine and Health Sciences (now known as Sonoran University of Health Sciences) in Tempe, Arizona, after a career in the medical products industry. He first earned an undergraduate degree in Biology from Arizona State University, followed by a graduate degree, also from Arizona State, in physiology; his research was on Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.

Initially, Dr. Selvey worked in public health, starting as a "health inspector" and then after training with the CDC, became an epidemiologist with the Arizona Department of Health Services. He first trained in infectious diseases, followed by environmental medicine focusing on environmental toxins such as pesticides, heavy metal poisonings, and aflatoxin.

During this time, Dr. Selvey chose to devote some of his time to teaching courses in Public Health and had several papers published in medical journals.

Dr. Selvey moved into the medical products industry when he went to work with a company that designed and produced biocompatible implants used by surgeons to repair disease or accident-damaged tissues.  In this role, he conducted clinical and non-clinical research on new products for approvals by FDA and foreign countries.  He literally traveled the  world doing this work.

Next, Dr. Selvey worked with a start-up company that was focused on the precision delivery of insulin to persons with Type I diabetes. He helped to develop and conducted the clinical research on external insulin pumps and supplies, the implantable insulin pump, and the continuous glucose monitoring system. Finding a "best in class" treatment for Type I Diabetes was both personally and professionally rewarding. In this role, he was privileged to know and work with some of the world's preiminent endocrinologists and diabetologists. This business was acquired for several billion dollars - and continues to lead healthcare for diabetes.

After nearly seven years in that position, Dr. Selvey was recruited to work with a "concept company" that sought to enhance healthcare delivery by reducing the cost of the medical and surgical products used in hospitals. To make this company successful, Dr. Selvey was instrumental in building a brick and morter business that had very high efficiency and effectiveness. This company grew from a handful of people to more than a thousand on both coasts of the US. He had the experience of testifying before The Congress, and met quarterly with FDA officials. This company, too, was acquired by one of the world's largest businesses.

This led Dr. Selvey to work with a highly respected and ethical pharmaceutical company engaged in developing products for aesthetic medicine. His experience in clinical research, as well as hands-on training, in the neuromodulators and dermal fillers was priceless.

More recently, Dr. Selvey has consulted with medical device companies designing new implants for hand, wrist and ankle surgery, wound healing, and craniomaxillofacial reconstruction.

Dr. Selvey's most recent position in the medical industry was as a Vice President and Chief Medical Officer for a company that created a totally unique and incomparable product to reduce fine lines and wrinkles through radiofrequency treatments.

Throughout his corporate career, Dr. Selvey chose to "give back" through teaching as an adjunct or visiting professor of Anatomy & Physiology at several colleges and major universities, teaching future healthcare professionals the basic science of medicine.

Principles of Naturopathic Medicine

First, Do No Harm (Primum non nocere)

Naturopathic physicians choose the least invasive and least toxic treatments necessary for each patient.

The Healing Power of Nature (Vis medicatrix naturae)

Naturopathic doctors recognize the body’s inherent ability to heal itself.

Identify and Treat the Causes (Tolle causam)

Naturopathic doctors identify, address and remove the underlying causes of disease.

Doctor as Teacher (Docere)

Educating and supporting patients on personal health management is an important role for naturopathic doctors. They empower patients to take responsibility for their own health. They also acknowledge the therapeutic value inherent in the doctor-patient relationship.

Treat the Whole Person (Tolle totum)

This is a holistic concept that recognizes the body as an integrated whole. Naturopathic doctors treat the patient, not the disease. A naturopathic assessment addresses the nutritional status, lifestyle, family history, physical, mental, emotional, genetic, environmental and social factors in a person’s life.

Prevention (Praeventionis)

Naturopathic doctors promote a focus on overall health, wellness and disease prevention.
